The Maine Brain Aneurysm Awareness Committee was both thrilled and honored to sponsor the inaugural Neuro Science Symposium at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, on January 10, 2025.

2025 Neuro Science Symposium attendees and speakers – Dana Education Center, MMC

This full-day event was offered to Neuro ICU nurses and featured an impressive panel of presenters sharing the latest research advancements from the past to the present. Six of our MBAAC committee members had the pleasure of engaging with attendees and observing the fascinating presentations throughout the day.

The highlight of the symposium was the renowned keynote speaker Mary Kay Bader, RN, MSN, CCNS, FNCS, FAHA, from the Neuro Critical Care CNS Mission Hospital in California. She delivered two exceptional presentations on Targeted Temperature Management (TTM), which involves intentionally lowering a patient’s body temperature to a specific target level to protect brain function following a severe neurological event. She also showcased exciting new tools for monitoring changes in neurological conditions.

Ruptured Brain Aneurysm survivors Amy Higgins and Kim Laramy sharing their stories of survival

As the day concluded, two survivors of ruptured brain aneurysms shared their powerful stories with the doctors and nurses in attendance. Hearing the heartfelt struggles faced by survivors always fuels thoughtful conversations between the nurses and those they have cared for.

We would like to thank the Maine Medical Center’s Neuro ICU/Critical Care team and Linda Gardiner, PN BSN, for this incredible opportunity and exposure. Maine is truly fortunate to have such exceptional teams working tirelessly to deliver excellent care to patients experiencing neurological emergencies.
