About Us
Two families struck by tragedy were brought together by the strong desire to honor the lives of their loved ones.
Kimberly A. Tudor and Karolina A. Kurka tragically passed away from brain aneurysms in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Despite the heartache of losing loved ones, their families were driven to create something positive in their memory. Thus, in 2009, the KAT-WALK event was born and quickly became a source of comfort and connection for families of lost loved ones, survivors, and caregivers alike. This inspiring event brought together a community of individuals who shared similar experiences and bonded over a common cause. The event was so successful that it eventually led to the creation of the KARO-5K run, which was held for the first time in 2012, in honor of Karolina’s love of running. Through these events, Kimberly and Karolina’s legacies continue to inspire and bring hope to others, even in the darkest of times.

Our Mission
The Maine Brain Aneurysm Committee provides information, education, support, and empathy to those impacted by brain aneurysms.
Our goal is to educate the public about brain aneurysms, their symptoms, and treatment options. Outreach and research save lives. We aim to make a difference by empowering individuals and families to seek medical attention when necessary and providing support for those affected by this condition.
Through our various support systems, including our Support Group and the resources provided by our Family Assistance Fund, we strive to offer comprehensive aid to individuals affected by brain aneurysms, their loved ones, and caregivers, reminding them that they are never alone in their journey to recovery.
Our commitment to funding brain aneurysm-related research, community outreach, advocacy, and programs throughout Maine and New England has been unwavering. Over the years, we have invested almost $140,000 towards these efforts, and will continue to do so in the future.
Our Inspiration
On December 28, 2008, our beloved Kimberly A. Tudor was suddenly called to God after sustaining a ruptured brain aneurysm at home. In 2009, Kim’s family and friends organized and held the first annual KAT-WALK in Kim’s honor. The name of the event was formed using Kim’s initials, and the event was held along the beautiful Back Cove area of Portland, Maine where Kim enjoyed many walks with friends and her pug, Bella.
On July 21, 2011, our cherished Karolina A. Kurka also passed away from a ruptured brain aneurysm. In September, only a few short months after losing Karolina, her family and friends joined our walk and found a community of support that welcomed and comforted them. This also fueled their desire to become more involved. So, in 2012 the first annual Karo-5K was held to honor Karolina and her love of running.
